Sudan: Reporters Training to Promote Professional Journalism

Clients: Norwegian Church Aid and European Commission

Dates: December 2008 to May 2009

Albany were contracted to provide Project Management and Professional Training for Sudanese journalists and editors of the nine local and English language newspapers. The training took place in the offices of Khartoum Monitor, a leading and influential English-language newspaper published in Khartoum and distributed across the country.

The training covered issues such as Reporting on Elections, Media and the Law, General investigative reporting techniques, reporting on economic matters and how to research and analyse information gathered for new stories. Finally, in a 4-day workshop at the end of the training programme, Albany assisted the Editors and Journalists agree and adopt a voluntary Code of Ethics for the Print Media in Sudan.

The Journalists were also given a comprehensive Resource Book as an aide memoire in their work.



Jordan: Media Strengthening Program

Client: United States Agency for International Development

Dates: July 2006 to July 2009

Albany management is working with IREX and the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania on a project funded by USAID to provide comprehensive advice on Jordan’s legal framework applicable to the media, and broadcasting in particular, with the ultimate goal of creating an enabling environment for free and independent media in the country.  The three-year project will involve a broad assessment of press, audiovisual and other laws; the structures and institutions governing media; and ways to develop training for media lawyers and future policy makers in Jordan on international best practices.

 

Iraq: Comprehensive Media Development Assistance

Client: UNESCO

Dates: July 2007 to March 2008

Albany Associates is part of a consortium (including BBC World Service Trust and IREX) that won a competitive tender to provide comprehensive media development assistance in Iraq.  Albany’s deliverables under the contract include the provision of legal and regulatory advice to policy makers, comments on draft legislation, and assistance to the broadcast regulator on consultation with stakeholders.

 

Iraq: Capacity Building and Comprehensive Training of National Media and Communications Regulator

Client: United States Government, Iraqi Reconstruction & Management Office

Dates: November 2006 to November 2008

Albany was awarded a $2.4 million contract to provide a comprehensive training and capacity-building program in order to strengthen the independence of Iraq’s converged regulator of broadcasting and telecommunications, the Communications and Media Commission.  This program includes:

  • Broadcast regulation
  • Licensing policy for broadcasting
  • Dispute resolution and enforcement
  • Public relations and consultation
  • Assessment of legal landscape
  • Training on law and policy
  • Telecommunications issues, such as numbering and interconnection
  • Soft skills, such as English language, management, business and computer skills

 

 

Iraq: Development and Organisation of International Conference on Iraqi Media

Client: Communications and Media Commission of Iraq (CMC)

Dates: January 2007

Albany conceived of and organised a conference on Iraqi media co-hosted by the CMC, UNESCO and UNDP at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris.  Participants include Iraqi policy makers, international donors and implementing organisations, and Iraqi media professionals.  This conference was instrumental in increasing UN involvement in Iraqi media issues.

 

 

Iraq: Report and Recommendations on Media Development, Law and Policy

Client: Communications and Media Commission of Iraq

Dates: May 2006 to October 2006

Albany managed a project involving a survey of Iraqi broadcasters on media development since the fall of Saddam Hussein and the provision of law and policy recommendations for the sector moving forward.
