Democratic Republic Of The Congo (DRC)

Albany Associates are part of a consortium including Internews and Fondation Hirondelle working on a five-year media development project funded by USAID in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Based upon continual research into technical, legal and societal factors, Albany are advising the newly formed communications regulator, reviewing and making recommendations on communications legislation and policy, and working to develop media law assistance and outreach capabilities of local civil society organisations.

Albany Associates are part of a consortium including Internews and Fondation Hirondelle working on a five-year media development project funded by USAID in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Based upon continual research into technical, legal and societal factors, Albany are advising the newly formed communications regulator, reviewing and making recommendations on communications legislation and policy, and working to develop media law assistance and outreach capabilities of local civil society organisations. The following activities are being delivered and developed in accordance to the contract:

Activity 1: Development of Local Media Law Specialists - Albany works to build a local media lawyer’s capacity to push for and effect legislation and regulatory reforms within DRC, and to provide legal assistance to journalists in need in DRC.

Activity 2: Support to and Liaison with Media Regulators – Albany advises several institutions on regulation and self-regulation of media

Activity 3: Media Regulation Conferences and Workshops - Albany is responsible for running conferences and workshops in support of legal reform, including on access to information and broadcasting reform

Activity 4: Review of Existing Media Ethics Code(s) and 1996 Media Law - Albany and the media lawyer conducted a comprehensive review of the existing media laws and regulations and made recommendations for reform. Albany conducts events and holds meetings to advance reform agenda.

Activity 5: Journalist Legal, Advocacy, Safety and Protection Assistance - Albany works to increase the capacity of a local organization to recommend and advocate for regulatory reform by providing on-going support and mentoring.
